Song 37
Song 37
‘You are a threat… but how big a threat?’
As you walk open-sailed
In
A
Summer
Of
Quail
Turn
My
Word
Where
Will
Concurs
In
A
Balance
Of
Days
A blaze of desire
While
Resistance
Fire
Your
Soul
Inspires
As
Freedoms dance becomes duties glance
&
Duty
Says
You must obey

Whakapapa: written in response to a question from the Self, ‘You are a threat… but how big a threat?’ A few weeks after receiving these words I went for a walk on the seaside walkway between Teddington and Governors Bay. As I wandered I turned the Self’s challenging words over & over in my mind. It seemed the Self wanted me to become (both in my ‘way of being’ & in my poetry) more threatening; more actively resistant to the forces that threaten the life of the soul, (and consequently the life of the planet). As I wandered I thought of the poet Blake & his resistance to these inhuman powers; to the ‘dark satanic mills’ he encountered in his time. I also remembered the Self speaking to me earlier in the year about becoming my own Blake.
Blake is the most dangerous man on Earth
It’s not about understanding the historical Blake
It’s about becoming your own Blake
When I am myself (my own Blake)
I am the most dangerous man alive

Blake’s ‘dark satanic mills’ grind on. They grind in the powers of conformity that trap people in deluding & dehumanising systems. They grind in the powers materialism, free market capitalism, secularism, scientism, rationalism, fundamentalism, militarism and exploticism. Exploiticism (my word) is the assumption human beings can exploit the planet’s resources as they please without taking into account the consequences. I thought about how poetry is always the voice of dissidence: of resistance. I felt challenged to become more dangerous in my own poetic stance. The poem is written from the view point of the Self.
