I want you to study the Book of Lament
I dream I’m a student at a Bible College. I begin to leave the central area of the College to follow the other students into a lecture hall. As I leave, the Dean of the Bible College intercepts me. The Dean has a gold plate embedded in his forehead and alongside his eye.1 The Dean asks; ‘Where are you going?’ I say; ‘I’m going to study mission.’ The Dean replies; ‘I want you to study the Book of Lament.’
I ponder. ‘Mission’ is the ‘collective task’ of the ‘Bible College. 2 However ‘the Dean’ (the Self) has other plans for me. Studying the ‘Book of Lament’ is to be my vocation. But what is the ‘Book of Lament?’ It takes years to comprehend.
The ‘Book of Lament’ is the lament of all who are caught in a ‘collective’3 way of being. From the Self’s viewpoint, ‘the collective’ is a horrendous catastrophe. 4 The soul laments because it is trapped in the collective and unable to connect with the Self. But there’s more. The Self also laments. The Self suffers and grieves. It’s nearly 18 years before I’m ready for the Self’s side of the story. The Self suffers an ongoing rejection and abandonment by humanity. Its crucifixion and suffering never end. The Self laments the loss of its connection with humanity.
‘Woe! Woe!’ the seraph cries
Jerusalem falls to the ladders of lies
‘Weep! Weep!’ the angel laments
Jerusalem’s bought for dollars and cents
‘Hope! Hope!’ the trumpet blasts
Where prophecy sounds, Jerusalem lasts
‘Seek! Seek!’ the base notes pound
In hearts of fire, Jerusalem’s found 5

2 I once studied at a Bible College. The ‘mission’ of the college was to teach an evangelical understanding of the bible. The Self sees this as ‘collective’ rather than ‘personal knowledge.’ It’s ‘collective’ because it’s a ‘group’ way of understanding the bible. In contrast, the poet William Blake developed ‘an individualised Christianity.’ Blake interpreted the bible in creative and artistic ways which remain highly influential.

3 Jesus talked about two paths; the wide and the narrow. The wide is the collective. The narrow is the personal path. The way of Self-realisation takes a person beyond the collective path and into the personal.
4 The Self is the archetype of individuality. As such it is diametrically opposed to collective ways of thinking and being. The Self’s archetypal imperative is to free people from the collective and connect them to the life of the Divine.
5 ‘Jerusalem’ is the ‘City of God;’ and thus symbolises the Self. Jerusalem also symbolises humanity in harmony with the Self and all Creation. The poem depicts ‘Jerusalem’ under siege from the powers of the collective.
