Who are you? Who are you?

Who are you? Who are you?

In a dream, I’m falling into an abyss of unfathomable darkness. Suddenly I’m held by cupped hands. I feel shocked. I realise I’m safe. Spontaneously I cry out; ‘Who are you? Who are you?’

Down, down, down I fall into utter darkness. Suddenly, I’m held. I’m safe and held. I feel awe.1 A question bursts from my heart: ‘Who are you? Who are you?’ I realise I’m encountering the Self. But who or what is the Self? 2

The question draws me ever deeper into the mystery of the Self. Accepting the essential mysteriousness of the Self shifts me beyond the formula’s which have contained me. I move into the realm of Mystery. One thing I know for certain; the Self holds and sustains my life.

I am the arms, I am the friend
I am the life, which never ends
I hold you when your faith is gone
I am the lamp which carries on

I am the hope, I am the true
I am the life that carries you
I am the strong, I am the wise
I keep you safe where darkness lies

1 The ‘realness’ of the dream affects me. First, there’s fear; then relief and safety. Wonder and questioning follow. I know I’ve encountered the ‘Something’ that holds and protects my life.

As I reflect, I remember a verse from the bible; ‘The eternal God is your refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms.’ Deuteronomy 33:27. I can see how the verse points towards the Self, but I feel reluctant to fit my experience into a box of religious language. The Self is beyond all boxes.

2 One way I come to see the Self, is that it is a spark of burning uniqueness. But how can I describe uniqueness? With what can I compare it?

See Saying 166: ‘It’s the Mass of uniqueness.’
See Saying 183: ‘It’s the uniqueness of the personal heart beating with all creation, seen and unseen.’
See saying 198: ‘It’s a uniqueness opening unto life.’
See saying 354: ‘Your very unique Jesus here’

Meditation: Open your heart to the origin and core of your life. When you are ready; shift into the emptiness beyond language.  Remain open and receptive to your origin. When your meditation is complete, reflect on your experience.
