The Track

You touch into questions while walking the track
From touchstone to waters to diggings and back

& the waters once dark, now incredibly clear
Speak of life that’s returning and freedom from fear

For there’s nothing so tough as to step out alone, from
The crowd with its judgements and pressures and phones

& to come to the turning, where you’re truly unsure
Just exactly who’s living your life anymore

Or who is the person you start to become
& where is the end of the depths that you plumb

& these are the questions, and this is the way
& there’s many who walk it, especially the gay 

& I love that you’re active and making your stand
& treasure awakens and birth is at hand 

& it’s certainly worth it, this birth of the light
As you open to others and self in the night

The poem was developed from the saying:

‘Political actions can do good for the earth
But the greatest action is the new birth
Which opens you up, to yourself and others’

The new birth is an ongoing and lifelong process that is both challenging and liberating. It involves the small self (ego) opening to the big Self (the transpersonal Self). This ongoing connection leads to the marriage of small and big as both learn and evolve. While the new birth includes an ongoing separation from the collective, particularly from its most toxic elements, it also involves various forms of activism, community making and artistic expression as we deepen our connection with ourselves and others.
